Heel Pain

At Atlantic Podiatry we see a large number of patients with complaints of heel pain.  It’s one of the more common things that we see people come into the office for. It’s usually due to an enlarged inflammatory cycle involving a ligament on the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia.  It’s a contractile elastic type of ligament and over the stress of day to day life, causes pain to that ligament.  We like to try to treat patients as conservatively as possible initially with heel pain, with treatments such as:

  • non-steroidal or steroid-type medicines
  • inserts or orthotics or support for that ligament
  • night splints, which also keep the ligament stretched out over time
  • injections
  • periods of immobilization, as well as,
  • at times, surgical treatment for this problem

Because these options are usually very conservative and straightforward and help in a short amount of time, we want patients come in initially and be treated with these options.
