If you have thick, discolored toenails, chances are you could have a toenail fungus. This is caused by fungus you pick up in the environment that will infect the nail bed in the nail plate. This will make your nail unsightly and become thick, discolored, even flaky sometimes underneath the toenail.
This is one of the most common conditions I see in the office. When patients presented this in our office, we give them different treatment options, the first one being a topical treatment. This is the medication that you apply on your toenail day-in and day-out to try to treat the surface of the fungus at the toe plate itself. Another form of treatment is an oral medication a patient can take in conjunction with a topical medication. This is much more effective to treat the toenail fungus, but due to certain side effects, it’s not for every patient. Our treatment choice for toenail fungus is laser therapy. Laser therapy works by using a high charged beam of light that penetrates the nail plate and kills the fungus underneath. It is done in the office, it’s pain free without anesthesia, and is over 85% effective.
If you’ve been embarrassed with unsightly, thickened, discolored toenails, make an appointment to come see us in our office and let us determine if you are a candidate for laser therapy.
