If you’ve developed a bump on the side of your big toe, the chances are you’ve developed a bunion. Bunions develop in the feet due to a hereditary imbalance within the foot. Oftentimes over time, the bump will become larger and the big toe will start to move sideways towards the lesser toes.
Patients usually come to see me when the bunions progress to the point at which they become painful on a regular basis. We’re often able to provide some temporary relief for patients by treating them with anti-inflammatory medication, padding, having patients wear a wider shoe, or sometimes give a steroid injection into the joint. However over time, the bunions usually progress to the point that in order to obtain permanent relief of the pain, patients require surgical intervention.
Bunion surgery today is performed on an outpatient basis. Most of our patients go into an outpatient center in the morning, have their procedure done under a local anesthetic, and return home the same day. Most of the bunion procedures allow patients to walk on their foot right away and they can return to most normal activities within six to eight weeks.
